Background and Purpose

 

□ To highlight the need for designing a standard platform for intelligent smart units by leveraging cutting edge technology.

 The Smart Defense Innovation Plan will likely lead to a dramatic increase in the volume of data due to the expansion of Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors, enhanced sophistication of sensors, and the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

 A standard platform is required to effectively process large volumes of data

- distribute the computing infrastructure centralized in the data center to the edge

- define the direction for AI applications for smart units to enable rapid decision making

 

Research Results

□ Design of a standard platform for “intelligent smart units” based on Edge computing.

  Shape the conditions to enable both the cloud computing of the Defense Integrated Data Center(“center”) and the edge computing of the smart units (“edge”).

 Leverage Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) to design a system architecture that enablessmart units (edge) to process the data collected from various IoT sensors.

 Categorize the flow of information between “cloud” and “edge” into three types and present possible scenarios for each type.

- High speed transmission of large data sets: e.g. training and education, equipment maintenance

- Hyperconnectivity between wired and wireless sensors: e.g. force protection, smart unit operation, and crisis management

- Real-time, ultra-low latency services: e.g. unmanned systems such as autonomous vehicles and drones

 Expected effect

- Network optimization via traffic reduction between smart units (edge) and the DIDC (center)

- Strengthen support to decision makers enabled by incorporating Intelligent Information Technology on data collected by sensors of smart units
