KIDA is a government-funded research institute established to provide systematic research and analysis on various aspects of defense policy, including security environments, military strategies, force development, weapons acquisition, personnel and resource management, and defense informatization. Our mission is to contribute to the formulation of rational and effective defense policies.

Originating from the Defense Management Research Institute founded in 1979, KIDA was formally established in 1987. Since then, it has been recognized as a premier institution dedicated to advancing defense knowledge and playing a pivotal role as a “cradle of defense expertise shaping the future.”

Each year, KIDA conducts over 235 research projects across diverse areas such as mid- to long-term defense policies, defense reform, military strategies, force development, acquisition policies, defense modeling and simulation (M&S), and defense informatization. By addressing rapidly changing domestic and international security dynamics, KIDA continues to lead the development of forward-looking defense policies as a global think tank.

In addition, KIDA engages in collaborative research and exchanges with key countries not only in Northeast Asia but also in ASEAN, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. These efforts strengthen Korea’s military diplomacy and significantly contribute to advancing national interests.
